Onkyo DSP Effects with Digital Cable?

Hi,

I have Comcast Digital Cable with the Motorola HD box, and the Onkyo HTS770 HTIB system. I have an optical cable going out from the cable box to the receiver. The receiver recognizes the audio signal as Dolby Digital. The problem I am having is that the rear speakers are rarely used. While this is ok for most shows, when I am watching football, I would like the rear speakers to be used more, for a more "in the game" feel. I tried boosting the rear speakers (+12 dB) but it doesn't really change anything. I am unable to use any of the DSP effects to get more sound from the rear speakers. Is there any way to fix this? Am I forgetting some setting? At the moment, it is not very enjoyable with sound coming out of just the center/front speakers. I don't know whether this makes any difference or not, but I am watching football on the HD channels.

Thanks for all help.

See This link for my experience watching football on HD. I was happy with it and it gave me an "in the game" feel.

I think the DSP effects work on a stereo input, not Dolby Digital.

Yes that is what I gathered from reading the manual. Thank you for the link jamawass. It is definitely channel dependent. I have not changed any settings from when I posted last, but I am watching the Philadelphia - St. Louis game right now on ABC and there is much more sound coming out of the rear speakers. I guess CBS just sucks

Don't know if this applies to a 770, but on my 760 I can force EX mode on a 5.1 source and get a Surround-Left/Surround-Right mix in the center rear speaker which makes for a more immersive surround field.

I'm not sure if "Dolby Digital" includes ProLogic II or is strictly 5.1, but is it possible that when you just got the front audio, you were getting a 2.0 broadcast?

If you're not getting the effects you want from certain channels/programs with the digital output, you can always run a pair of stereo cables from your TV (or the cable box) and use the DSP.
